They're at it again!

At an August 30th special council meeting, the City of Pickering Council unanimously approved a development proposal for a hospital located at Salem Road and Highway 407 as part of Lakeridge Health’s site selection process for a new hospital in Durham Region. The proposed site is directly on the headwaters of Carruthers Creek.

This proposal is a Trojan Horse - a way for Council and Developers (who are donating the land) to open up development in areas not currently zoned to be developed.

Let's be clear, of course Durham residents should have a new hospital, but there are better sites for this hospital, both in Pickering as well as in Whitby and Oshawa.

Duffins Wetland Complex

We have fought developers before and won!

Late in 2020 a number of citizens became aware that part of the Duffins Creek Wetland Complex was slated for development of a warehouse. This land has been a provincially significant wetland for almost 25 years and development has been expedited, without public consultation through a Minister's Zoning Order (MZO).

Our group of dedicated volunteers acted quickly to protect this wetland by:

  • Holding a demonstrations and blockading drilling access to the site

  • Collecting shoes for a Shoe Strike at Pickering City Hall

  • Hosting a March

In March 2021 it was announced that Amazon would be the likely owner of the proposed warehouse. When confronted with public backlash, Amazon quickly backed out of the deal.

As a result, Pickering Council voted to rescind the portion of the MZO on the provincially significant wetland. This was a huge win!
